The first unit to train at Blanding was the Thirty-first Division, comprising smaller National Guard units from Florida, Louisiana, Mississippi and Alabama, which took up residence in December 1940. In March 1941, the Forty-third Division, made up of smaller units from Maine, Connecticut, Rhode Island and Vermont, joined the Thirty-first at Blanding, which had facilities to accommodate two full divisions at a time. A friendly rivalry developed between the “Dixie Darlings” of the Thirty-first and the Yankees of the Forty-third. These were the first of what would eventually be nine divisions to train at the camp.
